How to Uninstall a Program in Windows 10?

Whether you just accidentally downloaded something you don’t want, or you may simply need PC maintenance to remove the programs you no longer use, it is important for you to know how to uninstall unnecessary programs. A bunch of unwanted software could bog down your machine and make it sluggish, so you’d better uninstall unwanted items to free up disk space for newer and more useful programs and apps you may want. In a traditional way, we use the built-in uninstaller from Windows system to delete things that we don’t need. For example, in Windows 7, just go to Start menu, and then to Control Panel, select Programs option and choose ‘Uninstall a program’. In Windows 8, you will need to right-click on the Start icon in the lower left-hand corner to open the Start Context Menu, and then select Programs and Features. After that, select an application and click Uninstall to remove it. But how to uninstall a program in Windows 10? Windows 10 comes with lots of apps preinstalled, but you probably won’t want all of them, and they can be tricky to uninstall. If you are new to Windows 10 and don’t know what to do, just follow the guides here:

  • Click on the Start menu, then select Settings. (The Start button is the Windows icon at the bottom left side of your desktop. )

  • Once Settings is open, go to “Apps”. This will open a list of all your applications. To remove one, click it once to show the Uninstall option, then click the “Uninstall” button. You will be asked to confirm the action.

  • You will have a list of all the applications you installed. Select the one that you want to uninstall. Here we take Avast Free Antivirus as example. When you select Avast Free Antivirus, you will see the Uninstall button appears. Click on it to prepare for uninstalling. (Please note that if the program you want to uninstall is grayed out, this is a system app you cannot remove in such a way.)

  • You will need to click on Uninstall option again on the box to confirm the action. Next, wait for a second until Windows removes the program.

What if the uninstall procedure is not working?

The ‘Uninstall a program’ option in the Windows Control Panel does not always work. Sometimes you may find the program is still there after you restart your PC, and the worse thing is traces like registry files or program folders may still remain. As time goes by, these wasted files will accumulate and occupy disk space. Therefore, you can consider a third-party uninstaller to uninstall software while also removing unwanted traces from your Windows 10 PC.
